    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 174 (1953) & G.O. 229 (1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Eugene Valentine (ASN: US-56062746), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 2 June and during the early morning hours of 3 June 1953, in the vicinity of Pung-Myon, Korea, a patrol of Company B had the mission of establishing a listening post several hundred yards beyond the friendly outpost. After the friendly group reached its destination they immediately set up a defensive perimeter and prepared for an attack by a numerically superior enemy patrol which was advancing toward their position. Private Valentine stationed himself on the forward knoll and fired his weapon with effective accuracy at the attacking foe. When friendly artillery began to furnish support fire, the patrol was ordered to return to the outpost. Although exposed to direct enemy fire, Private Valentine heroically fired into the enemy ranks, enabling the patrol to regroup and safely return to the friendly outpost. Moving through a hail of enemy fire, he continued to effectively fire his weapon until he reached the friendly lines. Private Valentine’s outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
