The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Michael O. Harris, United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 13 January 2003. Sergeant Harris distinguished himself as a true citizen and Soldier, risking his own life in an effort to save another. He was conducting physical fitness training when he noticed his elderly neighbor struggling with a fire extinguisher. Sergeant Harris made a closer observation and found his 70 year old neighbor pinned down between some furniture and a kerosene heater on the porch. To complicate matters more, his neighbor’s home was quickly becoming engulfed in flames. Sergeant Harris acted quickly by grabbing his neighbor who by this time had flames on his jacket, and pulled him from the house without any regard for his own personal safety and welfare. In the face of danger and at risk to his well-being, to save the life of another singularly attests to the gallantry, courage and dedication to his fellow countrymen. Sergeant Harris’ actions reflect highly upon himself, the Noncommissioned Officer Corps, and the United States Army.
