Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 50 (February 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Francis A. Uzzo (ASN: 0-2019394), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date, his unit was fighting its way through an enemy roadblock in order to escape envelopment by numerically superior hostile forces. Proceeding in a jeep through a gauntlet of constant automatic weapons and intermittent mortar fire, Lieutenant Uzzo observed a number of trucks loaded with wounded in front of him which were subjected to especially heavy fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, he manned the .30 caliber machine gun mounted on his jeep and, standing fully exposed, continually fired the weapon through the entire length of the hostile concentration, thus deliberately drawing the fire of the enemy away from the wounded and upon himself. Upon clearing the roadblock, he resolutely took charge of administering first aid to the many wounded and directing their further evacuation to an aid station. His calm and skillful efforts in treating the wounded throughout the afternoon of that day, and his courage under fire prior to that, serves as an inspiration to others and he was responsible for saving many lives s well as contributing to the comfort of the wounded. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Uzzo on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
