Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 117 (May 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Walter L. Tyson (ASN: RA-6383117), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date his company was under continuous attack by a numerically superior enemy force. Due to the intense enemy fire, the company suffered heavy casualties. Although he normally worked in the kitchen as a cook, Sergeant Tyson voluntarily left the kitchen and assumed command of a rifle squad on the front lines. He fearlessly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire in order to encourage his men and to concentrate their fire upon enemy strong points. In the course of this action, Sergeant Tyson shot and killed an enemy soldier who had crept up behind his platoon leader and was about to fire at him. His voluntary presence with the attacking unit was a source of great inspiration to his men and his calm efficiency under fire assisted them greatly in repulsing the enemy attack. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Tyson reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
