    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John Justin Tyrrell (ASN: 0-417894), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 132d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal). on 7 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. To rescue two members of his platoon who were wounded in their fox hole during an enemy attack, Lieutenant Tyrrell voluntarily crawled forward through heavy enemy fire directed from positions only 10 to 25 yards distant. Lieutenant Tyrrell reached the fox hole, but he himself received a serious wound, which resulted in his death.
