The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Coast Artillery Corps) James H. Tyree (ASN: 0-1053404), United States Army, for as a member of Battery B, 82d Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion (Self Propelled), 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 April 1951 in the vicinity of Sanchong, Korea. During the early morning hours of this date, Lieutenant Tyree was leading his platoon of antiaircraft firing vehicles in an infantry fire support mission when they came across a roadblock. Immediately, devastating enemy automatic weapons and mortar fire began to rake the column, causing many friendly casualties. Lieutenant Tyree, with complete disregard for his personal safety, left his vehicle and assisted in the removal of the wounded man. He then returned to the column, which was still under intense enemy fire, and directed the withdrawal of the vehicles. After withdrawing and regrouping his men, Lieutenant Tyree, once again led them forward placing heavy fire on the high ground, enabling the infantry to proceed with its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Tyree reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
