The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Lawrence M. Tyndall (ASN: 0-2201653), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1952 to 21 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. During that period, Lieutenant Tyndall was attached to Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment as an artillery Forward Observer. The mission of Company E was to retake Hill 266, “Old Baldy”. During the night attack, on 19 September 1952, intense enemy fire had scattered elements of the company which resulted in the loss of company officers and key non-commissioned officers. Realizing the company would become disorganized without a leader, Lieutenant Tyndall assumed the duties of Infantry Unit Commander in addition to carrying out his own assignment. Reorganizing the remainder of the company, Lieutenant Tyndall, with complete disregard for personal safety, led the unit up the hill under devastating enemy fire to the objective area. He then concentrated his efforts on adjusting defensive artillery fire in order to effectively hold this position. During the morning assault, Lieutenant Tyndall exposed himself to intense enemy automatic weapons and mortar fire while controlling scattered elements of Company E and directing them to defensive positions from which the successful final assault took place. Lieutenant Tyndall’s gallant actions and outstanding devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
