The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] James Edward Debrew, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 10 May 1970. Private Debrew distinguished himself while serving as a Rifleman in Company B, 3d Battalion (Airmobile) 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), during a combat action in the So San area of Cambodia. While moving down a trail, Private Debrew’s unit was pinned down by intense enemy fire, and numerous casualties were sustained. Subjecting himself to the hostile fire, Private Debrew maneuvered to an unprotected position and engaged the insurgents with suppressive rifle and grenade fire. Purposely drawing enemy fire to himself, he enabled his comrades to reach covered positions. Realizing that his fellow soldiers were still threatened by automatic weapons fire, he maneuvered toward the insurgents. Despite his wounds, he assaulted and silenced their bunker with hand grenades. Although he was mortally wounded while rejoining his comrades, his efforts enabled the friendly forces to maneuver effectively and rout the enemy force. Private First Class Debrew’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
