The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Tom W. Turner (ASN: 0-1323366), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1950, in the vicinity of Sibi-Ri, Korea. On this date, he was in command of a platoon of tanks which had the mission of supporting an infantry battalion in an attack upon strongly defended enemy positions. As one of the tanks was removing wounded riflemen from under heavy sniper and mortar fire it broke through a bridge and was immobilized. Lieutenant Turner advanced on foot, without regard for the intense enemy mortar and small arms fire, to the tank. Ascertaining that the tank could not move under it sown power, he returned to the rear and brought up another tank. When it was discovered that this tank was not able to move the disabled vehicle he left it in position as a guard and, taking one of the wounded crewmen with him, Again made his way to the rear. He soon returned with two more tanks and, though fully exposed to the concentrated fire of the enemy, mounted one of the tanks and directed the crews while the disabled tank was towed out of range of enemy fire. The dauntless courage, ingenuity and gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Turner on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
