The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Thomas F. Turner (ASN: ER-11152580), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 May 1951, in the vicinity of Umyang, Korea. As the convoy proceeded toward its objective, it was ambushed by enemy from well concealed positions. One of the platoons was ordered to secure a prominent sector from which intense enemy fire was being received. During this action, a portion of another friendly platoon was halted by fire from an enemy machine gun. Corporal Turner, with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved to a flanking position and placed accurate and effective machine gun fire upon the enemy’s position until he had destroyed the gun. Upon noticing a group of well dug-in enemy riflemen, he unhesitatingly charged the position, firing his machine gun from the hip. After he had exhausted his ammunition, he seized an enemy weapon and continued firing from an exposed position until he had single-handedly forced the hostile force to flee, accounting for 21 enemy dead. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Turner reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
