The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John T. Courtney (ASN: 73504), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at St. Agnant, France, 10 April 1918. Sergeant Courtney displayed courage, coolness, and the spirit of self-sacrifice, when he obtained permission to leave shelter and went through a shell-swept area to bring in wounded, carrying one wounded man more than 50 yards under heavy shell fire.
