The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Edward J. Tuholsky (ASN: RA-16374968), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date during an attack on enemy positions, Company L was halted by intense fire from a machine gun emplacement. Corporal Tuholsky, a 57-mm. recoilless rifle gunner, with complete disregard for his personal safety, braved the enemy fire to reach an advantageous position. Working his way to within a close range of the bunker he employed devastating fire into it, then assaulted the emplacement and killed the remaining enemy with his pistol. Again exposing himself to hostile fire, he stood in full view of enemy observation while destroying an enemy mortar and its crew with his rifle. As a result of Corporal Tuholsky’s dauntless courage, friendly forces were able to advance and secure their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Tuholsky on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
