Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 69 (March 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence A. Tuggle (ASN: 0-1017707), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Reconnaissance Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 November 1950, in the vicinity of Songehon, Korea. The platoon commanded by Lieutenant Tuggle, reinforced by a rifle platoon, was assigned the mission of patrolling the road to Samin-ni to locate a large group of enemy reported to be in that area. When the patrol was attacked by approximately 75 enemy near the town of Kapyong-ni, Lieutenant Tuggle skillfully deployed his men and forced the enemy to withdraw with many casualties. At Togyen-ni, while attempting to fill in a trench and a tank trap that had been dug in the road, the patrol was fired upon by a numerically superior enemy force armed with small arms, automatic weapons and an anti-tank gun. Lieutenant Tuggle continuously exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to direct the most effective fire against the enemy. After a fierce firefight the enemy was routed, leaving behind 42 dead and two prisoners. The patrol was again fired upon as it returned through Kapyong-ni and once again the enemy was dispersed with heavy losses. The superior and inspiring leadership of Lieutenant Tuggle enabled his patrol to accomplish its mission and return to its base after suffering only two casualties. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Tuggle reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
