The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Marcus Tucker (ASN: US-52085082), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 September 1952 in the vicinity of Sadmak, North Korea. On that date Private Tucker was serving as an automatic rifleman with the 2d Platoon of Company E as it moved into position for an attack upon Hill 266, “OLD BALDY”. At a point approximately 200 yards from the base of the objective, the 2d Platoon which was leading the attack, was suddenly and viciously ambushed by an enemy force of company size. Although painfully wounded by an enemy mortar round in the initial contact, Private Tucker immediately sought a position and mounted his automatic weapon. Then, with complete disregard for personal safety, he remained in his exposed position, laying down an effective hail of fire upon the enemy positions. Refusing medical treatment, he continued to spray the enemy with a withering and accurate fire until all of the wounded could be evacuated. Only then did he allow himself to be given medical attention. Private Tucker’s highly courageous conduct throughout the action was an inspiration to all who observed him and proved a contributing factor in the safe evacuation of the friendly casualties. The gallantry in action and the consummate devotion to duty displayed by Private Tucker reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
