Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 84 (November 1, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Warren J. Truitt (ASN: RA-12012426), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 September 1950 in the vicinity of Hagok, Korea. Sergeant Truitt volunteered to accompany an infantry combat patrol for the purpose of serving as its artillery forward observer. When the patrol encountered a numerically superior enemy force that was well-entrenched along a ridge it was pinned down by intense automatic weapons, mortar, and machine gun fire. In order better to observe the enemy and to ascertain their position, Sergeant Truitt exposed himself to this heavy fire and located several enemy targets. Manifesting complete indifference for his safety, he called for fire missions directing the artillery to strike within 50 yards of his post. The artillery fire so ably directed by him allowed the pinned down patrol to withdraw without suffering serious casualties. During the withdrawal he noticed a wounded infantryman who was unable to move. Fearlessly, he exposed himself to enemy small arms fire and aided his wounded comrade to safety. The intrepidity displayed by Sergeant Truitt on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the ideals of the military service.
