The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. Truax (ASN: US-51064833), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company C was attacking strategic and heavily fortified enemy positions. As the attack materialized the radio operator was seriously wounded, leaving the commanding officer without communications to call in supporting and covering fire. Private Truax, a wireman, realizing the importance of communications unhesitatingly made his way over open terrain toward the wounded man. Without hesitation, in spite of heavy concentrations of enemy machine gun fire which was placed upon him, Private Truax continued on his way until the objective was reached. After caring for the wounded man, he operated the radio, thus enabling the commanding officer to coordinate his unit with other attacking elements. The gallantry in action demonstrated by displayed by Private Truax on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
