The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lindsey (Linzie) Travis, Jr. (ASN: RA-15430243), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. Oh that date he attempted to drive his vehicle through a strong enemy roadblock. The enemy immediately fired upon him with small arms, automatic weapons and mortars. Without regard for his personal safety, he stopped his vehicle and began firing on the enemy with the .30 caliber machine gun mounted on the jeep. He continued to move his vehicle into difficult positions so he could deliver more effective fire on the enemy. Finally, after having expended twelve boxes of ammunition, he abandoned his vehicle, which had been damaged by enemy fire. He then took an 81-mm. mortar tube and base plate from another abandoned vehicle and mounted it without the bipod, holding the tube with one hand and dropping rounds into the mortar with the other. He continued this amid the intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire for approximately five minutes, expending about twenty rounds of ammunition. He observed and adjusted his own fire, causing many casualties among the enemy and slowing their attack. By this heroic action Private Travis brought great credit upon himself and the military service.
