The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Melvin C. Traudt (ASN: 35015284), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands. On 23 July 1943, Sergeant Traudt courageously volunteered to advance under fire through a cleared area to safely evacuate a wounded comrade. On another occasion, when assistance was needed to rescue a wounded man, he again advanced into the face of hostile fire to aid in his successful removal. On 31 July 1943, Sergeant Traudt was killed in action by enemy mortar fire as he aggressively led his squad forward in an attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
