The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Paul E. Trader (ASN: 0-1999973), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 64th Heavy Tank Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 May 1951, in the vicinity of Uijongbu, Korea, Lieutenant Trader took command of Company C when it was in a difficult situation. The company commander had been wounded in action and evacuated leaving three tanks mired in the mud and a fourth disabled by an exploding mine. Lieutenant Trader, realizing the necessity for removal of these important armored vehicles, braved strong enemy fire to direct the work of extricating the disabled tanks. For a grueling period of approximately five hours, while exposed to enemy fire from short ranges, he guided and actively assisted in the hazardous task. His efforts succeeded in recovering one tank and preparing the way for the removal of the other three. Lieutenant Trader’s gallantry and exemplary devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
