(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant J. A. Roberts, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the SIXTH U.S. Army, in action against the enemy in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant J. A. Roberts, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the SIXTH U.S. Army, in action against the enemy at Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea, from 28 to 30 April 1944. Sergeant Roberts was point of an Infantry patrol in enemy territory. Operating in thick jungle and through swamps, with numerous enemy groups moving through the area, he was able to determine and report the location of all hostile groups and thus protected his unit from ambush. He voluntarily reconnoitered dangerous localities and obtained much of the information which permitted the patrol to accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
