The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Candelario H. Tovar (ASN: RA-18261137), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Sinjang, Korea. In the early morning hours of that date he was a member of a forward observer party attached to a rifle company. The company, under attack by a large enemy force, had suffered numerous casualties. Private Tovar volunteered to evacuate the wounded over a route on which he knew the enemy had established a roadblock. With the aid of a rifleman, he broke through the roadblock and took five prisoners. He then proceeded to the aid station with the wounded men and turned the prisoners over to the proper authorities. After returning to the company, he continued to evacuate wounded to the aid station even though there was hostile sniper fire along the route. The gallantry displayed by Private Tovar reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
