Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 347 (July 23, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain John E. Totten (ASN: 0-1303576), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 and 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Somin-dong, Korea. During that period his company was bearing the brunt of the initial phase of a surprise attack by the enemy. Throughout the action, Captain Totten, with complete disregard for his own safety, personally reconnoitered routes of withdrawal for his company and then led them over the planned routes. Several times, when pressed by the enemy, Captain Totten drew enemy fire upon himself to enable his men to continue to withdraw from the hostile traps. His example of courage and determined leadership were mainly responsible for the extrication of his company from the enemy traps set for them during this period. The heroism in action displayed by Captain Totten reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
