The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Anthony C. Toto (ASN: RA-42011774), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, from 9 to 16 August 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. Sergeant Toto, platoon sergeant of a rifle platoon, constantly placed himself at the head of his men in leading them in the attack. On 9 August, when his platoon was attacking strong enemy positions on a hill, the intense enemy fire momentarily pinned the company down. Sergeant Toto, displaying complete disregard for his own safety, constantly exposed himself while urging the members of his platoon forward. On the following day, when an enemy machine gun effectively halted the platoon advance, Sergeant Toto dashed forward in a single-handed assault on the enemy position and destroyed it with a hand grenade. Again, on 16 August, when his platoon was forced to withdraw in the face of a numerically superior enemy force, and seek more favorable defensive positions, Sergeant Toto returned through a deadly hail of enemy fire to the side of a wounded comrade. He picked up the wounded man and carried him towards the friendly positions. On the way he was attacked and wounded by two enemy soldiers, but killed them both with his pistol. He then carried the wounded man to safety. The sustained courage, iron determination and aggressive leadership displayed by Sergeant Toto reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
