The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Julio C. Torres (ASN: US-50102381), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 June 1951, in the vicinity of Pangori, Korea, Private Torres’ platoon was engaged in an attack upon the enemy on high ground north of the Hant’an River when it was suddenly subjected to a merciless barrage of enemy small arms, automatic weapons, mortar and artillery fire. Voluntarily leaving his position of relative safety and fearlessly baring himself to the enemy’s lethal barrage, Private Torres made his way forward. Progressing on to the top of the hill, he made personal contact with the enemy, routing and killing many in those positions which were delaying the attacking platoon and, unaided, captured three prisoners. His daring aggressiveness under such hazardous conditions resulted in the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Private Torres’ exemplary courage and gallantry reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
