The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert M. Tormey (ASN: 0-978692), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Company K was attacking a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. During this action, Lieutenant Tormey was informed that another friendly unit, engaged in combat with the enemy, was in dire need of ammunition. He immediately secured the necessary ammunition and led a carrying party over the hazardous terrain to the hard pressed company. While with this unit the enemy made a daring attempt to overrun the friendly elements’ positions. Without hesitating, Lieutenant Tormey manned a machine gun and employed such effective fire upon the hostile forces, inflicting numerous casualties upon them, that they were forced to abandon their mission. His aggressive leadership and dauntless courage were highly responsible for the success of the friendly elements in repelling the overwhelming hostile force. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Tormey on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
