The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Maurice R. Tomlinson (ASN: 0-949857), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 August 1951 in the vicinity of Worun-ni, Korea. On this date elements of the regiment, were engaged in a fierce fight with an overwhelming enemy force, and heavy concentrations of enemy fire had inflicted numerous friendly casualties. Lieutenant Tomlinson, a staff officer, volunteered to lead one of the company’s leaderless platoons in the attack. Displaying outstanding initiative and aggressiveness, he led a ferocious assault upon enemy positions, delivering at the same tie an accurate and effective fire upon them. Undaunted by the enemy fire which struck his helmet, he continued forward, maneuvering his men and taking advantage of what cover the terrain provided, so as to complete the assault without a single casualty. The outstanding courage and unselfish attitude of Lieutenant Tomlinson created untold confidence within the men of his command, and were responsible for securing their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Tomlinson on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
