Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 309 (July 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Tom J. Tomkinson (ASN: RA-16310766), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 August 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date his platoon was attacking a determined enemy force on Hill 201. From well-concealed and well-fortified positions the enemy was directing a devastating volume of heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire on the platoon. During the attack the platoon leader was seriously wounded and had to be evacuated for medical aid. Corporal Tomkinson, seeing that the platoon was becoming disorganized, ordered a withdrawal. He then reorganized the platoon and led another attack against the fanatical enemy. Through his aggressive leadership and bravery, the assault was successfully accomplished with a minimum of friendly casualties and heavy enemy losses. Corporal Tomkinson’s devotion to duty, aggressive leadership arid courage, reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
