The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Moses P. Tigner (ASN: RA-15011022), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Taeyochang, Korea. On that day Sergeant Tigner, Platoon Sergeant, was dug in with his platoon on Hill 754 in defensive positions. Subjected to an all -night bombardment of mortar fire, the platoon was left with only 13 men and very little ammunition. When the enemy made an early morning attack in overwhelming numbers, the platoon was forced to withdraw. Sergeant Tigner, with utter disregard for personal safety, assumed a position of great danger to delay the enemy. By holding this strong point for over an hour and killing over 35 of the enemy, he enabled the wounded and other men from Company L to withdraw. He then withdrew across high ground and assisted in setting up a defense line to the rear of the hill. His gallantry in action and inspiring leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
