The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Jesse M. Tidwell (ASN: 0-129565), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne), 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 April 1951, while Captain Tidwell was leading his unit in an assault on a well dug-in and stubbornly defended enemy hill position near Suhoe-dong, Korea, the advance of the company was halted by hostile machine gun fire from a commanding position on an adjoining ridgeline. When the intense fire prevented a flanking action, Captain Tidwell decided to single-handedly assault the position. Boldly moving forward toward the machine gun nest, he effectively silenced it with a few well-placed grenades. Entering the emplacement alone, he successfully captured two enemy soldiers. Captain Tidwell’s gallant actions enabled the unit to continue its advance and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
