The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal (then Private First Class] Niles R. Thompson, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a member of Battery C, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment, (Antiaircraft), in action on Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on or about 20 April 1942. When a fellow crew member was trapped outside of the gun position during a heavy enemy artillery attack and was wounded, Corporal Thompson unhesitatingly left his sheltered position and rushed to the aid of the wounded soldier. Despite the continued hostile shelling he successfully brought his comrade to safety. Corporal Thompson’s courageous action, without regard for his personal safety, reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
