The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Holger H. Thompson (ASN: 0-1332436), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, near Soksa-ri, Korea, while assaulting enemy-held positions on Hill 876, Company A was subjected to intense enemy fire. During the fierce battle, five friendly infantry men were seriously wounded and unable to move to a position of safety. Despite the withering fire sweeping the area, Lieutenant Thompson fearlessly moved across the exposed to terrain to the stricken soldiers’ sides where he assisted in their evacuation. Throughout the entire engagement, he directed extremely effective supporting artillery fire which aided immeasurably in preventing excessive casualties to his own unit and inflicted heavy losses on the hostile force. Lieutenant Thompson’s gallantry under fire reflects great credit upon himself and exemplifies the high traditions of the military service.
