The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Holger H. Thompson (ASN: 0-1332436), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1951, near Tonguch’on-ni, Korea, Captain Thompson’s unit, executing a withdrawal to new positions, was viciously attacked and subjected to a withering hail of hostile small arms fire. Vehicular and foot traffic was very dense along the route of withdrawal and because of the close proximity of the enemy forces, the unit was ordered to deploy along a railroad embankment with the task of protecting the north and west approaches to the route of escape. Taking control of a platoon, Captain Thompson skillfully deployed it so that the hostile advance was momentarily checked. Incorporating dispersed British troops into his own unit, he continued to direct the covering operation, disregarding the enemy fire, until a general withdrawal had been effected. Captain Thompson’s resourceful leadership and heroism reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
