The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Golden L. Thompson (ASN: US-51021162), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, in the vicinity of Tokko-ri, Korea, while occupying defensive positions near Hill 860, Company I was suddenly attacked by a large enemy force. When the attackers reached a position approximately 200 yards from the company command post, they set up a machine gun and began to subject the friendly troops to a withering barrage of fire which inflicted numerous casualties. Realizing that the only two mortar crews that were in position to place effective fire on the enemy were rapidly exhausting their supply of ammunition, Private Thompson unhesitatingly left his sheltered position, dashed across exposed terrain, and successfully delivered ammunition to the mortar section. Noticing several wounded infantrymen lying in an open area, he courageously went to their assistance and, after administering first aid, helped in their evacuation to safety. Private Thompson’s gallant and aggressive actions materially contributed to the ultimate repulsion of the hostile force and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
