The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Frank M. Thompson (ASN: RA-18262026), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Military Police Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 February 1951, near Sonsi-ni, Korea, Corporal Thompson, in his capacity as a military policeman on road reconnaissance for future traffic movements, necessarily dismounted and accompanied by another military policeman, walked approximately one hundred yards forward. Dug-in enemy troops suddenly opened up with small arms and automatic weapons. Corporal Thompson leaped into a nearby fox hole and returned the fire. During this exchange of fire, Corporal Thompson was wounded in the leg and his comrade received wounds in both the face and leg. Heedless of his own safety, he assisted his helpless comrade to the vehicle and still under heavy fire, drove to safety. Through his attention to duty and courage under fire, he saved the life of his comrade and kept this vehicle from being destroyed. The gallant actions of Corporal Thompson reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
