The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Broadus J. C. Thompson (ASN: RA-34010765), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. His company’s defensive position was attacked by enemy forces supported by armor. Two enemy tanks had been destroyed by 3.6-inch rocket launcher fire and from behind the protection of the disabled tanks a large group of enemy was preparing to launch an assault. Realizing the enemy’s intention, Sergeant Thompson immediately maneuvered to a position close to the enemy force. He then hurled hand grenades among the enemy, taking them completely by surprise and causing them to withdraw in confusion and disorder, leaving a large number of dead and wounded behind. His bold and courageous action on this occasion reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
