Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 44 (January 25, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William P. Thomas (ASN: US-53030412), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau-san, Korea. On this date upon setting up a perimeter of defense, Company L’s position was immediately attacked by a fanatically determined hostile force, who was attempting to overrun the friendly positions. During this encounter, Private Thomas was painfully wounded but refused to be evacuated to the rear for medical treatment. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he remained in his position and inflicted heavy casualties upon the hostile force. Through Private Thomas’ devotion to duty and rigid determination to defend his position, the enemy was forced to retreat suffering heavy losses. His courageous and selfless actions were an inspiration to all of his comrades and were highly responsible for the success of his unit in this engagement. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Thomas reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
