Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 135 (November 26, 1944)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Field Artillery) John Elliot Theimer (ASN: 0-17566), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 695th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (Separate), in action against the enemy in France, on 7 September 1944. During the night of 6 – 7 Sep 1944, the 695th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, supporting a task force of the 7th Armored Division, moved to the Moselle River. Upon arrival of the task force, the enemy blew up the bridge. Colonel Theimer then led his battalion as it maneuvered next to Maisiere-les-Metz, taking positions from the Germans as well as a number of prisoners. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Theimer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
