The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lawrence E. Terry (ASN: RA-13267152), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date Sergeant Terry’s machine gun squad was attacking the left sector of Hill 266, “Old Baldy” with elements of Company G. When they had reached the summit he emplaced his machine gun squad and moved to the right to deliver flank protection. The enemy launched an attack on this flank in waves, savagely throwing hand grenades into their midst, but Sergeant Terry, although wounded and suffering from concussion, held his position and succeeded in repulsing the enemy. As his squad began to run low on ammunition, Sergeant Terry, with complete disregard for personal safety, sprang to his feet and dashed from one position to another, braving the deadly enemy machine gun fire, in search of more ammunition. Time and again he returned to the position with boxes of machine gun ammunition amid a rain of exploding mortar rounds. During this action he was again wounded, but, refusing medical aid, he once again took up his post on the flank. Throughout the remainder of the fierce battle, Sergeant Terry, with unbelievable courage, fought off the savage grenade assaults and continued to brave the lethal fire to supply the squad with more ammunition. Although suffering from his painful wounds, he refused to leave his men until he was certain that they would be able to maintain their position. Sergeant Terry’s display of gallantry and consummate devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
