The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Charles F. Terry (ASN: RA-6570955), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chudon-ni, Korea, on 31 December 1950 – 1 January 1951. His battalion was under attack by an estimated enemy force of division strength. After attacking on the flank the enemy suddenly switched his attack to assault the positions held by Sergeant First Class Terry’s platoon. Entirely disregarding personal safety he voluntarily left the comparative safety of his foxhole and exposed himself to direct enemy fire to rove from position to position to direct the fire of his men. Seeing that ammunition was running low, he again exposed himself to intense fire to deliver the much needed ammunition to his men. As the attack increased in momentum and more enemy troops joined the assault a section of machine guns on the company’s left flank was overrun and the important weapons lost. Once again displaying extraordinary heroism he immediately organize what men he could gather and led a daring counterattack which was successful in recapturing the guns and reestablishing the defense line in that area. He then reorganized the ground for defense and held it until ordered to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant First Class Terry, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
