The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Riley Shirley Taylor (ASN: US-55059597), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 August 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, during an attack, Corporal Taylor’s platoon was subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire. Realizing the need for immediate action, Corporal Taylor moved forward to an exposed position, and with complete disregard for his own safety, opened fire on the enemy positions. He succeeded in destroying an entire enemy heavy machine gun nest and inflicting numerous enemy casualties before he fell fatally wounded. His self-sacrificing action enabled the unit to move forward and accomplish its mission successfully. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Taylor reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
