Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 849 (December 12, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Raymond Taylor, Jr. (ASN: US-52062064), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On that date, during an attack on a heavily fortified and strategic enemy-held hill, Private Taylor demonstrated dauntless courage and cool behavior before the enemy. While advancing toward the objective his automatic rifle was blown out of his hands but, disregarding the fact, continued in the attack armed only with hand grenades. When the intense hostile small arms and machine gun fire pinned down his unit, Private Taylor, realizing the seriousness of the situation, advanced forward armed only with grenades. Skillfully maneuvering himself over the hazardous terrain, he succeeded in destroying the enemy bunker, obstructing the advance and killing all the occupants. As he continued forward an enemy machine gun commenced firing on Private Taylor and he fell fatally wounded. His courageous actions were an inspiration to the men of his unit and aided immeasurably to the success of the attack. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing spirit displayed by Private Taylor reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
