The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Norman James Taylor (ASN: RA-16309536), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 13th Field Artillery Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Uijonbju, Korea, on 31 December 1950. Knowing that enemy forces were approaching a position approximately 1,000 yards from our main line of resistance, he voluntarily and completely on his own initiative went forward to this position in an attempt to recover a quarter-ton vehicle. A small force of enemy soldiers approached to within a distance of 25 yards but he remained there with several comrades making an attempt to rout the determined enemy and recover the vehicle. The outflanking numerically superior enemy soon surrounded him but when was in the midst of fierce hand-to-hand battle he was still valiantly attempting to annihilate the opposing troops. Private First Class Taylor’s courageous actions in the face of overwhelming odds resulted in the killing of approximately seven belligerent soldiers and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army Artillery..
