The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Albert L. Tanghe (ASN: 0-1081038), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 May 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On the night of that date, Captain Tanghe was leading the battalion kitchen train northward to the forward command post, when the enemy brought heavy fire upon the motor column. Captain Tanghe was thrown from his vehicle when it was hit by a bazooka round, but immediately recovered and ordered the lead vehicle to proceed forward. Under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, Captain Tanghe completely disregarded his own safety as he returned to the end of the column and directed the driver to turn his vehicle around. Captain Tanghe then collected the remaining men and led them to the safety of friendly troops. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Tanghe on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
