The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Nelson A. Taber (ASN: 12005167), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 September 1950 in the vicinity of Kochang, Korea. On that date he was assistant leader of a motorized patrol which was reconnoitering roads and bridges between Kochang and Muju. Twenty miles north of Kochang the patrol encountered an enemy force of approximately 75, equipped with small arms, a T-34 tank and a field piece. The patrol, in order to take advantage of the element of surprise, immediately attacked the enemy. Sergeant Taber skillfully led a part of the patrol in a flanking maneuver against the enemy, who abandoned the tank and field piece and withdrew to the hills. Pursuing the fleeing enemy he inflicted severe losses upon them, personally killing three enemy soldiers and capturing two others. As a result of his daring and bold leadership the patrol succeeded in routing a numerically superior enemy force and destroying tactically valuable enemy materiel. During this engagement a total of 25 enemy were killed and 8 prisoners were captured. The gallantry and skillful leadership displayed by Sergeant Taber reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
