The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred Szymanski (ASN: RA-13295764), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 and 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On the night of 26 November 1950, the command post of his company was attacked from the rear by a numerically superior enemy force. In the initial onslaught all members of the command post defense perimeter were wounded, with the exception of Sergeant Szymanski and three comrades. The four remaining members hurled back the first fanatical enemy assault. Sergeant Szymanski, with complete indifference for his personal safety, then left his covered position, crawled forward to each point of the defense perimeter and dragged his wounded comrades to the safety of a nearby draw. He administered first aid to the men, under constant enemy fire, and then returned to the command post, where he assisted in repelling three more fanatic enemy thrusts. In the early morning hours of 27 November 1950, the group received orders from their battalion commander to fight their way to friendly lines. Sergeant Szymanski immediately volunteered to cover the withdrawal. Assuming a position at the rear of the column, he held off the enemy, while his comrades, assisting all the wounded, began the necessarily slow withdrawal. He intrepidly remained at the rear of the column and held off the enemy by rifle fire, until the entire group reached the safety of friendly lines. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Szymanski reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
