The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Edward Syx, Jr. (ASN: RA-16334575), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kong-dong, Korea. On that date Company B was advancing upon enemy positions when intense machine gun fire from an enemy emplacement threatened to halt the movement. Sergeant Syx, realizing the seriousness of the situation, advanced toward the hostile position despite the heavy enemy fire. Working himself nearer to the emplacement, he completely destroyed it with hand grenades thus enabling friendly forces to continue the assault and secure their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Syx on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
