Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4 (January 4, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Raymond Switlyk (ASN: ER-42106843), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951 in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that date Sergeant Switlyk was a radio operator with a unit in defensive positions being subjected to the fanatical assaults of a numerically superior enemy force. During this action he fearlessly carried his radio through the hostile fire from position to position, transmitting and receiving messages. In the course of this act, he was painfully wounded, but realizing the importance of his assigned mission, he refused to be evacuated and tenaciously continued on. Despite the extreme pain, Sergeant Switlyk carried his SCR 300 radio for many miles, thus enabling the company commander to maintain contact with adjacent units and execute a well coordinated and successful movement of friendly troops. His disregard for his personal safety and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallant conduct displayed by Sergeant Switlyk on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
