The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Third Grade Raymon W. Swiderski, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at Lakeview Firing Range, Camp Haan, California, on 4 July 1944. On that date, a fragmentation grenade struck a parapet while still being held by a soldier who, apparently dazed by the simulation, released the safety lever, arming the grenade. At the risk of his life Technician Third Grade Swiderski jumped from his position at the bottom of the pit and attempted to reach the grenade. His way being blocked by the soldier, he immediately pulled him down flat into the pit as the grenade exploded. His act saved the soldier from almost certain death or serious injury. The heroism displayed by Technician Third Grade Swiderski on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
