The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Garry L. Sweet (ASN: RA-12357711), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 11 September 1951, near Hajinmyong-dong, Korea, Company I was attacking a well-entrenched enemy force on Hill 396, when their advance was impeded by several hand grenade-hurling foes located in two bunkers. During this action, Sergeant Sweet, a squad leader, realized the assault must continue and fearlessly exposed himself to the bursting grenades as he raced over the embattled terrain throwing a grenade into the first bunker and firing his rifle until it was completely destroyed. He then crawled to the remaining bunker, hurled a grenade into it and, as the only remaining enemy soldier partly exposed himself in an attempt to throw a grenade, Sergeant Sweet fired, killing the man instantly. His bold removal of the two enemy bunkers enabled his comrades to advance and successfully accomplish their mission. The gallantry and aggressive initiative demonstrated by Sergeant Sweet reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
