The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Phillip H. Condit, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 11 October 1918. With marked bravery, Lieutenant Condit led two platoons under withering machine-gun fire in an attack on a machine-gun nest, and succeeded in killing the entire enemy crew, including an officer. His company commander having been wounded, First Lieutenant Condit organized his company’s sector in a shallow enemy trench, which had been captured, and for two days held this position against repeated hostile counterattacks, inspiring his men by his courage and cheerful bearing in the face of hardships.
